Lets Make an Army!: Rebel Alliance Pt. 1

LMaA Xwing

Let’s Make an Army! is hobby progress series where I take the starter sets from your favorite games and show you how to get the maximum value out of them! This time around we are going to be build a Rebel fleet for my personal favorite game: Star Wars: X-Wing. As always, I’ll be starting with the common starter kit and progressively adding more ships and building my collection into a competitive list (or at least one that won’t get blind-sided in a tournament). Let’s begin!

As of the time of writing, X-Wing only has one starter set; focusing on the Rebel and Imperial forces. To represent these factions (and largely their play style) the set comes with 1 X-Wing and 2 Tie Fighters. Quality vs. quantity is the key concept here; this set is fair in that one X-Wing has the durability and firepower to take on those 2 Tie Fighters, who main strategy is to try and gang up on the Rebel player. Your job as the X-Wing pilot is to maneuver in such a way as to limit the effectiveness of the tie fighters (try to make them crash in to an asteroid!) and focus on taking one out a time.

GAMEPLAY

The basic pilots and upgrade cards can be found on this online database. To give a brief overview, Luke Skywalker and R2-D2 is a fantastic combination that you get right out of the gate, the two combined can make that beefy ship even more beefy, and the long your alive, the more shooting you can get it.

The maneuver dial of the base X-Wing is nothing to get too thrilled about. No tight turns, no massive straight line either. This ship just wants to turtle around at medium speed and focus fire on whatever it can get in its view.

So for this week I wanted to theme up the basic X-Wing with a touch of red and yellow to make it look a touch more like the icon Rebel Squadron from Star Wars: A New Hope. I think it turned out pretty well, though one of the “Barrels” of the right wing broke off; my fault entirely! Until i can fin something to replace it with, I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out. Stay tuned as I start my themed Rebel army, The Corellian Defense Force!
